Syria conducted SWIFT transfer first time in 14 years

June 19, Fineko/abc.az. The Syrian government has made a SWIFT transfer to an Italian bank for the first time since the beginning of the civil war in the country in 2011.

ABC.AZ reports with reference to Central Bank’s governor Abdul Kader Husrie. The payment was made on June 15 and, according to Khusriye, is very important for Damascus, which is striving to return to the global financial system.

Syria has been in state of civil war since 2011. In addition, Western sanctions have been imposed on Damascus, including an embargo on oil imports. In early June, the head of the local Central Bank announced a number of measures to restore public confidence in the state financial system. Among other things, he announced the reconnection of the country to the SWIFT system.
