U.S. government suspends work

12:05 - 1.10.2025

October 1, Fineko/abc.az. The U.S. government suspended most of its activities on Wednesday after a spending bill supported by the Republican Party failed to pass a vote in the Senate due to continued opposition from Democrats.

ABC.AZ informs that this is the 15th work suspension since 1981 and the second under President Donald Trump, who used this opportunity to threaten to lay off even more federal workers.

Tens of thousands have already been laid off this year, and more than 150,000 workers are expected to leave the federal payroll this week after receiving severance pay, the largest exodus in 80 years.

The suspension is likely to halt the release of the closely watched September employment report on Friday, slow down air travel, suspend scientific research, delay the payment of salaries to U.S. troops, and force 750,000 federal workers to take leave at daily cost of $400 million.
