December 9, Fineko/abc.az. Excise taxes on certain types of tobacco products have been revised in Azerbaijan.

ABC.AZ reports that Azer Amiraslanov, the chairman of the Committee on Economic Policy, Industry and Entrepreneurship, made the above-said statement  at today's plenary session of the Milli Majlis.

He added that the initial draft provided for the regulation of excise taxes only for cigarettes made from tobacco. However, after additional discussions with relevant organizations, it was proposed to increase excise taxes on alternative tobacco products. "These proposals are based, among other things, on the recommendations of the World Health Organization, as such products negatively affect health," Amiraslanov said.

He stressed that an increase in excise taxes on conventional cigarettes without adjusting rates for alternative products could lead to a sharp increase in its consumption.

"Due to minimal prices and low excise taxes, their market share could increase significantly. Therefore, there was a need to review the rates in this segment," the MP said.

Amiraslanov noted that excise taxes for products with inhalation without ignition containing tobacco or reconstituted tobacco are increasing from 16 to 25.5 manats per 1,000 units; as well as for smoking, homogenized, reconstituted, chewing and snuff tobacco - from 22 to 162 manats per kg in local production and from 30 to 170 manats per kg during import.
